Remember this: Level Vibes
Definitely a golden period in Uk flat, and I missed this one, out in the states at the time, Martti killed Level Vibes, the Uk had loads of contests, Easter jam at southsea, Urban games, KOC, Level Vibes, Sam's jam in sawston, the Uk flat website, so much good stuff went down in this period. Pros visiting such as Martti...What are your memories from this period of time..

Shintaro Misawa Summer 09 edit
Just came across this when I was posting the Cali style stuff, Shintaro Misawa rips, smooth floaty style. All on board the Badman's Colony "cube" frame, I know hes stoked...
Cali style
I've been a bit slow sticking these vids up, yes they were on Flat friday, Chad sent these to me on tuesday, first video is the Hollywood jam on Fuel Tv, flatland more and more seems to be getting tv coverage similar to this, which can only help to progress things for the riders.
The second video is Chad at one of his local spots in Long Beach, the "globe" spot, I rode a bunch here with Chad a few years back, anyway enjoy these vids if you haven't already seen them.

Effraim Catlow Bike Check: Zion Focus prototype
Had couple of requests for the bikechecks to return, starting with mine. Currently testing the first version of the Sam Foakes signature "Focus" Zion frame, so far so good, the frame is really responsive, Sam and Mislav are making a few changes to the thickness of tubing on the next prototype (Sam would like more weight), and angle of back chainstays, and change to the back dropouts...At only a few months old it's to early to talk about the strength of the frame, but the frame for the most part, rides extremely well. Just a few minor details to change.

Pioneers: Dennis McCoy + Kevin Jones
Heres a couple of vids by popular request of Dennis McCoy and Kevin Jones, Dennis pioneered the way for modern day flatland along with Kevin Jones and the Plywood Hoods, not to mention numerous others, I could go on.... I love the first edit of McCoy at the AFA Austin 1988 I grew up watching this on a tatty vcr tape, this somehow added to it, no internet and we are watching what's going on in the US. Feel the energy, and the speed McCoy cranks into the tricks, inspiring!!!! Also take note of the crowd being so into it, they knew he touched on the triple flail boomerangs in Arizona (previous afa round), love it!
+ If anyone knows the mixes he rode to below, get in contact..
Kevin Jones as an amateur rider, AFA Arizona 1988. Already bringing his original tricks to the game...Great run.

Moto Sasaki Interview
Intro/Interview:EC. Translation:Taku.
Last year I spent the day riding alongside Moto Sasaki when I was at the Yokohama mm21 spot right before the KOG finals with Sam, Mislav, and our host Aki, watching this guy ride for a day outside of the contests was more interesting to me than watching the contest riding in my opinion, Moto can do so many tricks, and he's now able to throw his skills back in the original switches. I remember saying to Sam, look he just did all of Matthias' tricks with ease right after the sevisual video with Adam Kun came out last year, he later threw a massive combo, with Switch foot karl jump frame to xft halfpacker pivot to steam with epic ease, his control amazed us. Like a ninja, quietly going about his business. It's my pleasure to bring this interview to you, one of the most skilled riders in Japan, Moto Sasaki...My prediction....if this can can match the skills with personal belief, he can be a massive force in flatland.
FM) How old are you?
M) Date of Birth: 5/5/1985, 24 years old
FM) How long riding?
M) 6 years.
FM) What got you into riding?
M) i got my bike stolen then i bought a bike that was a BMX
FM) Whereabouts in Japan are you from? Hows the flatland scene there?
M) Maihama, Chiba. very close to Disneyland, there are not large number of riders here in Chiba if it compares to other prefectures in Japan. Chiba has more good riders (chiba has the most king of ground pro riders in japan) than other prefectures though. we dont get together to ride often we are kind of spread out in Chiba so...
FM) Do you ride on your own mostly? Or with other riders?
M) i like riding with other riders but at the same time, i like riding by myself and enjoy it with my own way.
i often ride with Yasunari Ishijima (jimalog guy) at night.
FM) What got you into flatland?
M) Well, i think every riders has their own way to enjoy their riding, some riders think bmx as fashion, others think riding as a sport. To me, flatland bmx is like playing a computer game, getting new tricks like clearing the stages then i can go to the next stage, thats how i enjoy riding.
FM) From the few times i've seen you ride, its evident you can do a lot of pros tricks, explain why you do that?
M) I do that intentionally, I'm learning a lot from them, getting their ways to keep a balance and ideas that lead my original tricks. It's said to be that the originality is the most important in japanese contest scene.
I dont think i'm always right, but, in my opinion original tricks are beyond skills.
When I went to the masters, I felt the physical difference between top riders and me. If I only ride to pursue the originalty I can't reach to their riding in contestwise.
When i got back from the masters I was thinking about the styles, then my choise is that I lean every ways to keep the balance and cover up the physical difference with it. And.. to be honest, I had hard time to understand the judges before. I thought like if i have skills, i can pass judgment about results, because I know which tricks are harder, so I judge at KOG expert class.

"To me, flatland bmx is like playing a computer game, getting new tricks like clearing the stages then i can go to the next stage, thats how i enjoy riding."
FM) Which tricks have you made up yourself?
M) Switches from x-footed half packer (Switch foot karl jump to xft halfpacker for example) and jumping switches...(infamous Moto pedal 5 jump to steam)
FM) What are your plans with riding?
M) I just want to see how far i can go with my riding.
FM) Who supports you with riding?
M) I'm riding for JYKKJAPAN (bmx distributor), SUELO(bmx brand), UBIQSHOES(shoes brand),SLOPESHOT(bmx shop).
FM) What inspires you with flatland?
M) i only do flatland. coz flatland has countless tricks, infinity styles and possibilities.
i like street too. but,i put so much energy and time on flatland and i dont think I will ever get sick of flatland.
FM) Which riders do you look up to for inspiration?
M) Trevor Meyer is my favorite rider, when I first saw him riding on flatland manifesto, I got a big impact from him.
Other riders I get inspiration from are Hotoke, Keisuke Tanigawa and Shuichi Osada.
Hotoke, his sense of proportion is insane. Shuich Osad has a great concept on his tricks.
And Keisuke Tanigawa, he is the same age as me, he is definitely the most skilled rider in Japan, I respect them.
FM) Do you travel much to ride? I remember we saw you at the yokohama spot last year..
M) Basically, i ride at my spot the most. Yeah, I was there at the yokohama mm21, just because you and sam were there...
FM) Do you like the battle style contests, or prefer the 3 minure run style contest format?
M) It depends on the battle time, but I prefer the 3 minutes run rather than head to head battle.
In japanese contests, there are not enough time to try harder tricks because the run time is short so consistency is more important. If i were audience, I understand the two mins runs mean and I wouldn't like to see mistakes... but I'm a rider who wants to see the best trick!
Especially, KOG battle format, one min two runs each battle and the combo in progress after beep isnt evaluated.
I've seen many good riders lost the battle with trying hard trick and making one or two mistakes, it's like they lost against the battle format.
I feel sorry for them sometimes...
FM) Any rider you are scared to battle?
M) scared?? i would say... Keisuke Tanigawa and Hotoke. Despite I've been riding 8 hours a day everyday since I started riding, they are obviously better than me and have original tricks, love riding.
I had felt down about it before, we are friends now and I dont think i'm scared of them anymore. I reckon them among my rivals. I dont want to lose against them more than any other riders, they have always motivated me. I think their existance made me better, so i kind of appreciate them.

Eighties revival?! Haro demo at the Worlds
1986.. I was at the Poole UKBFA National, competing in the Under 12 class on flat and ramp, and watched the Haro team (Ron Wilkerson, Brian Blyther, Dave Nourie), they blew my mind with their energy, and how high they were going, certainly influnced me as a young rider.... 2009, the ex haro team are back and doing a demo at the Worlds this year, f**king awesome!

Great World Championship footage from 1999-Winner Phil Dolan
Just came across on youtube yesterday, cracking footage from Juan Macion at the 1999 Worlds in Madrid, Spain, I don't remember a great deal from this contest, the floor was like that of a building site (not in a good way), and it was so hot, all the contests ran in the late afternoon, early evening. Still the contest went off, Phil Dolan won his second world championship, Andrew Faris was on it for almost the whole contest, apart from the final run where he touched a few times, Nathan Penonzek rode amazing in qualifiers, but the spanish guys got naked before his finals run and totally threw him off. Oh and Faris famously got so wasted in the trophy ceremony, asking for the first place trophy. It's on baco as I remember.

Trevor Meyer & Alexis Desolneux Solitaire 2
Two rad videos from 2000, the Solitaire videos by Armin Batoumeni and Christophe Dassie ruled, almost like a mix tape of all the best riding from the year. 2000, what a year, X games, fly back for King of Concrete, ten years, seems like yesterday in some ways. Im drifting off here, back to the vids, great stuff from Trevor at the X games, and Alexis is shredding brakeless. Enjoy.
Pete Brandt 2009
One of my idols growing up, Pete's still busting in SF like always,an inspiration to all the older riders and perhaps younger generation (I can't speak for them), nice back wheel combo from him here, enjoy!

Interesting read on the ESPN site today, Roy Christopher writes about the lack of flatland coverage in the mainstream media, and why this occurs, for the most point, stating the obvious, still at least someones out there exposing flatland to the masses via the ESPN site.

FM exclusive! Sam Foakes August 2008 edit
Check this out! Tgm Maz has just dropped this, lil bit of background...Sam wanted to show a very progressive time in his riding career, and as hes not competing this year he wanted people to see this stuff, the three links that you see back to back, they were right as Mario turned the camera on! And the 7 infront of the bar whips to halfpacker backwards backpacker out, that was on a very wet day at tgm, pissing with rain, windy as fuck, right now i'd say this is one of the most progressive edits out there. Thanks to Mario and Sam for sharing this groundbreaking time in Sam's career. Amazing!!

With the worlds fast approaching...
With the weeks counting down the 2009 Worlds in Koln is fast approaching, and last years winner Sam Foakes not competing, who will win this year? Two of the favourites must be current World Circuit No 1 Matthias Dandois, and Justin Miller, Justin has won the masters three times in a row (comparably to Martti's triple X games wins in a row), Matthias interestingly has never won the Masters (worlds this year), also Adam Kun always seems to do well in Koln, placing top three on three separate occasions. Heres two battles between Matthias and Justin, each going either way. Who will win this year? Let us know what you think?

New talents emerging from the french scene, Maxandre is on flow from A bad thing, Charles Paty has crazy pumping style, saw him at the circle cow 2 years ago, has improved a lot...Good to see a new generation of riders coming through..
Day Smith then and now (97/09)
Day Smith kills it in this graveyard static video 1997, one of the most powerful styles ever in flatland, an inspiration to many pros. I've had the pleasure of riding with Day at the Intrikat jams a fair few times in recent years, hes still on it, I hope someone makes a new web edit that showcases all his new stuff, incredible!

Past World Champions: Andrew Faris 1997 + top three
Eindhoven 1997, awesome contest in the ice rink, Andrew Faris dropped this incredible run to take the win, Jason Brown brought his consistency and powerful style to a second place finish. And Martti Kuoppa won the admiration of every flatlander in the world, with his creative tricks, massive long combos. Take a look. Paul Roberts brought a great atmosphere to this contest, I remember having goosebumps watching this live. This contest basically started a few years rivalry between Faris and Kuoppa, and the progression of flatland boomed as a result.
Hardcore Radness
Loving this!!! I have these on video somewhere, golden videos, awesome footage of Pete Brandt, Ross Smith busting out, Claude Hickman who made these videos still rides...Enjoy...

More MK bangers
Continuing from yesterdays post about MK, heres two of arguebale his finest creations in flatland, these two links are monsters!! I honestly think he could drop these right now, and blow everyone away. Is it old, yes, but is is better (ie, creative/difficultly) than whats being done currently, yes!! What do you think?
Martti Kuoppa 2002-2003
I just got done watching this video of MK in and around his prime, when he killed every comp, and it left me with a thought, this guy was at the top, and he brought something to the sport to be at the top, he brought his own creative flair, almost all the tricks you see are either his tricks, or he's added something to them to make them his own. This is a top pro rider in my mind. Im currently more stoked watching old videos than I am new contest videos, riders dont seem to have that creative spark currently, what are others peoples thoughts on this? Dont hold back now, lets hear it!
Style: Jay Jones
Jay Jones killed it in the late 80's/early 90's, first saw this guy ride at the Trier Worlds, cranked so fast into tricks, inspired many during the early nineties, first guy i ever saw do switch hand hang nothings, style for miles. Enjoy!!

Toyama contest report + photos
Moto Sasaki pedal hang five jump switch to steam!!
Angchang getting crazy in the polluted river after the contest, only in Japan!!!
Top three, Ucchie, Takahiro and York.
Four riders from the east took a trip to Hokuriku area for An-cup flatland contest.
An-cup took place in Toyama on 7th of june.
Me and Moto Sasaki and Takahiro Ikeda, Takashi Ishida decided to stop Komatsu to ride and hang out with York Uno and Komatsu riders.
We really had good time there. York and Shingo, Yuta and Yuya took us to beach and a great seafood restaurant by the beach after riding session.
We talked a lot about flatland with beer and tasty food! Thanks to Komatsu crew for great host!
Komatsu has one of the best flatland scene in Japan and Next KING OF GROUND is held in Komatsu, Ishikawa.
Komatsu riders are working hard for organizing and promoting KOG in Komatsu, I was there last year that was the best flatland event I've ever been to.
So dont miss it!
They wont disappoint you! I guarantee.
Komatsu riding scene.
Sunday morning we headed to Toyama for An-cup.
This contest was oganized by Angchang(a rider from toyama) to help flatland grow in Hokuriku area.
The comp started with Angchang decade instead of a pledge of fair play on behalf of all the riders in beautiful park by dirty river in Toyama city.
There were three classes at the comp, about 50 riders showed up.
York Uno.
The floor was slanted so most of riders struggled with it, even York and Ucchie were having hard time to pull thier tricks.
But Takahiro Ikeda did perfect run with his crazy fast spining tricks at high class final!
Ike swept to win the comp for his first time with prize money!
After the call of his first victory we threw him into the polluted river! and Angchang after him!
Congratulation Ike!
Here is the result of high class final...
1 Takahiro Ikeda
2 Yohei Uchino
3 York Uno

Past world champions..
With the worlds a month away, I wanted to pay respect to past worldchampions counting down to the event, some of which are still riding and killing it in their own way. First up is Phil Dolan's winning run from Koln 1996..

HOMAGE: Colin Smith and his videos
A new section to flatmatters, where I will be "homage" to riders and filmers who have helped progress the scene, influencing the past and present to this day.
That quiet lad from the Shetland islands who would always be at all the main events (1997-2000) with video camera glued to all the riding, Colin Smith was a flatland enthusiast who made his mark on the flatland world without probably even realising it, his videos stand the test of the time to this day, A Breed Apart was perhaps his most popular video, not to forget A way to enlarge time, and SOB.
Colin helped capture an "era" of riding that was golden. All his videos contain a healthy mix of contest footage and practise footage, also lot of privatre sessions. If you havent seen any of his videos, take a look at these, and even if you have, memories!!
Colin always had that knack of being in the right place at the right time,I miss the days of recieving videos/dvds full of un edited unused footage from Colin. Much respect due.
"I liked the music of his videos. I also liked the fact that they had contest footage mixed in with hardcore session clips. I can remember watching those VHS tapes until they were so worn out they would almost not even play."
Terry Adams
"My first experience of Colin Smiths work was A Breed Apart. What an inspiring vid. For me the video was all about a good vibe and most notably the explosive progression of Martti in 98, post army. All of Colin's work is great quality and he always seems to capture the best riding from any event - you can count on that. Thanks Colin for your commitment to the sport, and for making a funny noise when Martti pulled a pedal deathtruck to pedalling time machine.Ohhh yeaaaah. Hopefully it wont be another 5 years before I see you again!"
